Spirit of the Basement

bert: people would respond to the questions and pol.is would cluster them, and then we'd see what the clusters are which would be fun. best practice is to start with 25-40 statements. we'd ask people to respond to the pol.is over the next week. happy to work with anyone on this or use another tool.

lp: seems like a cool experiment and a tool i'd like to be more familiar with.

bert: our group is likely too small for pol.is

micro: on the website it says pol.is not for gathering data for groups less than 50-100 people

bert: maybe i over-indexed on pol.is on this but am happy to look for alternative options. i tried using it today and it's really easy to use. let's do a smaller group and explore other tech we can use

working group -- bert, lp, micro, devin

Experiment Log

micro: proposal that we frame ideas as experiments rather than as policies. would like to embed a spirit of change. as people change it'd be good to be easily able to question and change things. this reflects on woodbine as an "experimental hub" and will provide flexibility + remove decision paralysis. step 1 would be going in the wiki and trying to encode things we currently do as "experiments". what are the current experiments?

Experiments

  • jitsi for meetings
  • matrix
  • what are we doing this week
  • experiments
  • parking tickets?

lp: i've wanted to implement something similar before. this makes it easier for someone without social capital to try something new which is purely a good thing

Asbestos Update

micro: giving the boaty made me think we should have some standing tchotchkes

puck: what's next steps?

lp: next we get back results tomorrow. there is some intuitive understanding of what's going on but we could get news from [no problem, residuals on the pipes, disaster] which has a remediation cost ranges of [0, 2k, 40k]. a very common location of asbestos is around pipes which likely existed but was then removed. also around sealing of T joints. if we get the middle option we have to figure out DIY vs Woodbine.

myf: talked to Woodbine about this a bit and it seems promising -- we are one month off from finance reconcilliation and it's the first thing the broader org would look at after that happens

Meeting Procedure

puck: need to think about how to improve this - can't have these multi-hour non-productive conversations. encourage everyone to think about this.

lp: this seems like a good avenue for experiments.

micro + myf: we tried to call the end of the meeting at the hour mark but people didn't want to end it at that time.

devin: people want to be in the discussion but they don't want to let the discussion take so long. we need to be better about proactively indentifying conversations that are overflowing the time budget.

lp: let's choose a way for improving this and start with that

Cleaning Update

llama: basement went through a deep cleaning. we are going to pay for this initial round of cleaning and it's likely worth having a recurring cleaning on some maintenance schedule

lp: it'd be good to have a bunch of additional supplies like a duster, other kind of mop (roller mop), etc

llama: only the three desks were cleaned but none of the other surfaces were touched. we'd need to be a bit more organized before we could have other things cleaned

micro: making people aware of the schedule would be an extra important reminder to make sure they put their stuff away

'deceptive site warning' on chat.woodbine.nyc

devin: this is from Firefox

micro: this is from Google's list of safe sites. i filled out the form and now we wait for a response. if we want we can use personal connections.

Announcements

puck: propose an experiment of a standing announcement part of this meeting. no discussion for announcements.

llama: we now have a NUC that i will try to set up here as our hosting server

lp: i brought some leftover floorpaint and some paper humidity sensors. also brought some cement fix for improving potholes.

What Are We Doing This Week?

devin: did an interview, then did the coding challenge. we'll see how the rest goes.

lp: the genus lama is spelled with one L including for llamas so the species is lama llana

bert: been really enjoying battery stuff. wrote a fun small program for case-sensitive replacement.

micro: bone-stuff.

llama: really enjoyed the all-nighter i pulled last week.

puck: been really enjoying just living and doing nothing. gym etc.
