# meeting 0x16
attendees - puck, fei, jonathan, lippe, joe, mitchelll, brandon, coco (they/them), alex, myf, devin, jude
online - will starting 19:40
## agenda
- [x] introductions (10m)
- [x] ventilation planning (5m) - @lippe
Threw [two pictures](https://matrix.to/#/!CCAUyIEzkqzXiOFmXc:woodbine.nyc/$tiZitgFuSiuictNX6TlpFFCvSE1kTJwDtTMIrxODnCY?via=hope.net&via=woodbine.nyc&via=matrix.org) up in the matrix. Lippe prefers the long rigid hudcting with flexible tentacles at planned points. Which do we want to do? Please look and give feedback. Looking for buy-in, argumentation. **Who will actually help do the work**. Brandon can give us another inline motor. We have one that is being used.
Make sure we make the blast gates very visible. DOCUMENT. pokeyoke - lets figure it out.
how do we secure the rigid part? we might need some anchors and 2xXs to have some place to mount to.
- [x] CNC machine enclosure for safety/cleanliness (10m) - @brandon
Machine is close to being a CNC - we are figuring out how to mount spindle sensor. We need to think about DUST. Separating dust from the electronics makes sense. How will we enclose it? What's involved? @puck is doing a (topological) survey (with @lippe) of the basement space, so we can actually work on it.
the beginning is inviting, the further you go the scarier it gets
- [x] networking the tv? (2min) - @micro
smart tv, we can send things around. @myf up for challenge
- [x] steering committee relationship (10min) - @pHuck
signal chat during the week, request for the steering committee to use the space this Saturday. Its the woodbine Admin. Is there a basement advocate for steering committee (myf, will).
We don't really have a representative model for steering committee - @myf
Not opposed to having a rotating memeber and delegating.
having good 2-way communication is what i'd like. rotating member would be anti-fragile. it would be nice to keep communications as people have responsibilities. you are brand new and want to help - awesome! this meeting might not be the best place. - @josh
rotation itself might not be a solution. you have to be patient with us, things are changing in 6 months. we are going to have way better agenda transparency. sometimes it takes us 3 or 4 meetings to get to the bottom of something. so rotating slows that down, because you are playing catchup. fall back on the signal threads. myf, will, I am on there. feel free to ask us! - @mitch
@josh - lets have our representative (@myf) report back to us
@myf - can i chime in on rotation. we are trying to be radically transparent here. lets have the steering committee read these notes!
@mitch - yall will probably encounter this problem. people's voices being proportional to their material contributions. rotation is difficult. not sure who is on the current steering committee. just increase communication. if you want to send different people, try it. i dunno
@lippe - sending different people, is not going. long-term rotation might be good for us, the group, and less about communication. things that will help, is process, like this. having accessible documentation.
@mitch- we can work hard to make sure people don't feel slighted, tricked, betrayed, etc
@lippe - imagine wb strength, farm share they all have some connection to steering. it would be cool to have a way to bring up something to steering directly.
@mitch - recent process we introduced (open agenda), people can add, we can participate in prioritization
@myf - we are doing pretty good on self-reliance
@josh - no change to the status quo. if something is requested of the basement, that should be added to the agenda, and we discuss it. it did not feel like an ask.
@lippe - if this is sticking around, having some rotation might not be bad. it should not be shut down entirely.
@micro - express their wants and needs (e.g. that is not the way they want to talk to us)
- [x]
- [ ]
- [ ] what to do with the printers? (5m)
@devin - we picked up 13 ender 3s, a giant anycubic, and a flashforge with 2 print heads! current idea is make a class on "how to build a printer" 60-100$? 2-4 people per class. they get to take it home!
@brandon - we can do other things with the printers, but class was the first one. we need to figure out the shape they are in. batches will help.
@lippe - do we want to optimize storage? Are we unconcerned with where they are currently. Is there expiration date for these things? Parking tickets?
@brandon - idea is to break them down into kits. They will take up less space.
@devin - can put these in "piles" more. We can tighten the footprint.
injection molding machine - huge, dont know if it works. anyone want a 2oz shot machine.
@brandon - if we get cnc working, then we can use it to make soft tooling! it can do 60g of plastic, polycarbonate. You can overmold electronics.
@lippe - functioning status, value, etc.
@micro - (class) most people never show up for day two of class unless it's a fermentation. it doesn't matter if you have prerequisite people will ignore.
@brandon - putting together isn't really the hard part. there will be a subset of people who has built printer. there are million of things coming afterward like tuning.
@fei - it would be nice to do a test run with someone. participatory audience member. example: with small parts people who arent sitting at the table will have trouble seeing it. What are all the materials they need to buy, what do they need to setup on their laptops.
@brandon - we have 20+ spools of pla we can use. if the class happens, we will have all the parts needed.
@micro - final point compesation to the teacher. some places the teacher name the price they want. 50/50 share.
@fei good point to set up instagram before - ill
@pHuck need a group on signal or matrix
@brandon: timeline: a month of two
@lippe - i will document the class!
@will - political content, consequences of having the common resources. we don't need to be content neutral. (what is the spirit)
- [x] classes (10m)
@simon: build a microphone class, a simpler workshop compared to the 3d-printer
@micro: skill share standing
- [ ] wood shop? how to (5m) - @myf, @alex, @coco
@myf - opportunistically got to talk to jesse, who pays for that space, who built and own many of the woodshop resources, with alex. background he was here before us, paid for the space, been using it as personal woodworking studio. for a long time, only one here. he started to fade away as schoolwork got very intense. during the time he was away, we established ourselves. now there is more a conversation between us and jesse. we want to invite him to join the hackerspace. this conversation needs to happen to share the space. so many people excited about woodworking thing. **form a matrix group** if interested.
Another potential conflict is the dust, environmental particles. Should we move things? How does redesign fit in.
@mitch - its jesse's tool locker here right now.
@alex - i took a list of the things that are jesse's there, and what he feels comfortable with sharing for trusted people. Basically every tool not in the locker is fine to share.
I've started to take note on donated stuff, and we are figuring out provenance. There's some great equipment.
@mitch - festool is mitch's. he's mostly okay sharing it with the group here.
@micro: a way to mark ownership of tools and encourage people to use the tools.
@bradon: resistor has a locker system.
@fei - two questions - 1 about the wood shop. 2 is about trash disposal. its counted by weight right? If you make something big here, how do you get rid of trash?
@mitch - we have a special relationship with trash collection; it kind of only falls on cardboard boxes right now. if you make a gigantic bag of sawdust, not sure what to do about that. store in the front and we will schedule special pickups.
@will - reclaim it through the cnc machine.
@lippe - pictures from the other hackerspace (heatsync) - "parking permits and parking tickets" - i love the idea i can grab a tag and say "i am using this, it will leave by time X". some kind of labelling system.
@fei - hours? if i wanted to come here and work, i would pick a block where an event happening?
@myf - we dont have a public facing calendar for woodbine right now. we are working on it.
- [x] welding
@jude - I wrote my proposal to chat. I think it would be fun to teach people for free, and how that works with the other dynamics of the basement, im not sure. im open to people's idea. i've been part of collective metalworking spaces, its a goal of mine to do something like this. i might have to go by the end of April, but Dingo might be able to carry the torch.
I am going to be getting my own welder, and as a trial be able to bring and share and see how that goes. No promises, but lets try seeing what a metalworking zone would feel in this basement. Doesn't have to be 100% all or nothing now, but i want to push this forward.
@myf - i had a convo a year ago about this, at that point it wa
s non-starter. Now we have limited ventilation. We need to figure out how to contain everything. Noise, heat. Boiler room has lots of oil inside of it. How to we keep safety.
@fei - could the welding happen outside, on the sidewalk?
@micro - fire extinguisher. fdny has class to teach people about putting a fire. we should be comfortable for it.
@devin - do we have power?
@jude - it would be a 120v, what im getting. can do up to a quarter inch steel.
@lippe - fundamental issue is that we need to take front panel off the fusebox to know what we can do if a fuse blows.
@myf - we want to change the fusebox. been there since the 60s. $15,000 to get our electrical to something relevant / safe.
@lippe - we need to know what we are working with - failure modes. what do we have? what happens if we pop a breaker.
@brandon - we need to do this anyway. since the cnc spindle is 900W. 1.2hp. the OSHA guidelines for welder is 2000CFM per welder.
@micro - heatsink lab moved cities because certain cities allow welding in their jurisdiction
@lippe - it would be awesome to have welding here, but if you are looking for space, i might be able to find a better space than whats here.
@jude - the more spaces that have accessible spaces, the better. its fine if this conversation doesn't end here, literally in the basement, but I want to make it public collectively.
- [ ] spirit of the basement (10m+++) - @devin
- [ ] what is it? what is not'nt
is a man who died 45 years ago on the lift. he is why everything is broken.
in discussions that involve long term agendas. the first thoughts dominate the framing. i want to note that it could be helpful if we don't solve this here, but have time to chew on it.
@micro would we want to set the agenda
devin: a way to introduce people to the space. i dont want to be a mission statement. i want a general idea of what the space is. i;m gonna throw some ideas. there is no leader here. it's just people.
micro: you trying to do what
devin: to be able to introduce to people. even at the beginning of a meeting we say it.
myf: woodbine statement
devin: something the basement isn't, is that the basement shouldn't be a space for people to use. it's not a storage space or a commercial space. i don't want these to be prescriptive either. i want the space to be everyone, a community effort. making the space to be ab le to do other things.
devin: if we can write it down and put it somewhere for people to read.
phuck: saturday hack day might be a place to introduce people, instead of the meeting time.
micro: encourage people to write what they think the current policies are. what you change about yourself when you come to the space. we can use this to see...
micro: if something ask what is it? they should come on saturday.
lippe: hack manhattan is a place where you pay 75 bucks i get my cubbie and i can work on my thing here.
jude: building a reciprocal space.
fei: there are so many layers that cannot be articulated. it's free but there are other things you have to pay. people come and leave so how you are right now is differernt from how you are two years down the line.
micro: there is a meeting on wednesday. as of recently, on saturday, you can expect some people. we learn a little bit about each other every week. it sounds like a cult but it's actually not.
will: floor plan, set of policies. likes what micro says. weird psychology games we learn about each other. the paper network project is about prompting people with questions. what brought you to the space. why do you want to make things. what is it that you want to fabricate stuff for your self. many ways to go about building things.
micro: if we can find a better way to describe the space, that is a win.i
micro: what's your thoughts on the word hacker (primpt)
will: what attracted you to be here (prompt)
myf: how do you describe the bsement to other people. (prompt)
phuck: i like to see things to go from nothing to something
lippe: exploding before condensation is a good idea.
lippe: what do you think the basement is for?(prompt)
jude: can compile the prompt into a document.
will: organize it into a document.
newguy: i like what someone says about change, incorporating... i hope it doesn't stop.
lippe: within the confine of the basement, there might be things that start here and eventually move on to somewhere else.
creating new hedgedoc to have people to go through and answer. we can relfect on those.
